This is my (2015)QUILT panel for the Join (RED) AIDS Awareness Campaign. This is a cause that's very dear to my heart, as HIV/AIDS is a danger to all and is one we all need to be more vocal about.
Many people believe the initial threat of AIDS and HIV that we saw in the 80s and 90s has gone away; nothing can be further from the truth. In fact, according to AVERT, there are currently around 1.2 million people living with HIV in the United States of America and around a fifth of these are unaware of their infection, posing a high risk of onward transmission. Out of those cases, nearly 50% are African Americans (due to anomaly that occurs to ancestrally-created antibodies to malaria [link]
) and it was estimated that out of the 34 million adults worldwide living with HIV and AIDS by the end of 2010 , half were women and biologically women are twice more likely to become infected with HIV through unprotected heterosexual intercourse than men.
This is an issue that truly affects all of us: male, female; black, Latino, Asian, white; gay, bi, straight; young and old and everywhere in between. The ONLY way to fight this epidemic is with KNOWLEDGE, and to spread this knowledge for all to know and understand.
